***Upgrading the BMX track***

Brainstorming and planning day
Saturday 11th October

Friends of Overtoun Park are hoping to apply for funding to upgrade the BMX track.  The track is currently in very poor condition and several of the jumps are beginning to crumble.  Several young BMXers approached the group asking for help in improving the track and would like to include a new skatepark.

We held a planning session in the track to give the riders the opportunity to discuss their concerns with a track builder and Councillors Robert Brown and Gerard Killen. The pictures below show what the riders liked and disliked about the track and how they would like the track to look.

The red dots indiciate 'dislike', the green dots indicate 'like'.  The bikers generally like the shape of the track but the surface is the main concern.  They also discussed getting the jumps and the berms shaped properly.

Very little has changed - the first double to be changed to a step up, the triple to become a table.  The main improvement would be the surface and shaping of the jumps.  The 2 red tracks are to be improved for the dirt bikes.

What happens next?

Since the planning day, Friends of Overtoun Park have been working to get the process started.
  1. We have met with the Council and have permission to go ahead.
  2. We would like to install solar powered lights in the BMX the Council are going to cost this for us.
  3. We have met with agencies to help us to gather more information from the community.
  4. We are discussing funding with various grant agencies at the moment.
  5. We are going to issue questionnaires to local youth groups to gather more information about who uses the track.
  6. The Council will look into the planning issues of adding a skate park in the future
